Principal’s Message

Dear Springer Families,

Volunteer Breakfast

On May 23rd please join the staff and myself in honoring all of our parent and community volunteers.  By volunteering you have just given the most expensive and priceless gift anyone could have ever given – kindness and love. Thank you--each and every one of you have made a difference  in all of the students lives with the time you have given to Springer School.  Please join us at 8am in the Multi to be honored.  In addition, come meet  Mrs. Robin Robinson, next year’s Principal; I will be introducing her to our Springer Community.

Art Docent - Art Show

I spent the night looking at the art pieces created by our amazing students.  It was a showcase of our students unlimited creativity.  I was astonished by the work and talent of all of our students.

Lost and Found

The winter chill is gone and our students have forgotten about their beloved jackets.  Please check out the lost and found; it has so many treasured pieces of clothing to be reunited with their owners.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Lynn

Reading Corner

Reading Corner:  Why Did the Author Do That?

When we think about the writing moves an author used to tell a story, teach something, or try to persuade, we are considering the author’s craft. This is one way to help the reader comprehend the text in a way that goes beyond the literal meaning of the words on the page. Maybe the author has chosen to repeat a phrase over and over again. Why is that significant? How did the author grab your attention, or set the tone with the beginning of a story? Does the way that the author organized the sections in an informational text help us understand what we’re meant to learn from it?

Thinking about author’s craft can also help students improve their writing by providing examples of different techniques. Readers who think about how an author used text features, such as maps and photos, might use those techniques in their own writing. If a reader has noticed that descriptive words in a story help set the mood, he might be inspired to write a more vivid description of the setting in his next story. A fan of graphic novels who has studied the way the author combines illustrations and dialogue might incorporate that in her own work.

Readers of all ages can try this analysis of an author’s craft. If a story is funny (or suspenseful, or sad, etc.), what did the author do to make it funny? Are there jokes in the speech bubbles, or silly pictures of the characters? If there is something that stands out in the text, such as repetition or even bold print, why might the author have written it that way? If a text is teaching something, how is it organized in a way that tries to help the reader learn? How does the way the author chose to organize the information help us understand what is most important? Considering author’s craft is one way to step back and think about texts in a way that can deepen our understanding while reading and inspire our writing.

Happy reading!

—Tiara Wirkkala, Springer Literacy Instructional Support Teacher

Springer Scribes

Every Thursday, a dedicated group of writers has been meeting at lunch to craft poems and stories as part of the Project Cornerstone FunVisor Springer Scribes activity. At our final two meetings on 5/10 and 5/17, each author is invited select their favorite work to be published in our fourth annual literary journal. If your child would like their work included, you can also email a copy to SpringerScribes@gmail.com.

This program is a really fun and rewarding opportunity for both the kids and the parent volunteers. It shows the kids another "caring adult" in their lives who can help them find their "spark." Our parent leader is "graduating" this year, so we are looking for parent(s) to keep the program going. If you are interested in volunteering next year, come by Thursday at lunch to learn more and join the fun, or send a message to SpringerScribes@gmail.com.

Yearbook

Thank you for submitting your pictures for the yearbook. It looks terrific and it is being sent to the printer on Sunday, 4/21. As such, we can no longer accept any more pictures. Every effort was made to include the pictures submitted.

As a reminder, the PTA is providing one yearbook to each student and will be distributed in early June. Thank you!

*If you are interested in purchase additional yearbooks, please contact Rachel - michelson.rachel@gmail.com, with the subject line: Springer Yearbook purchase question.

4th Grade Instrument Quest

May 29th and May 30th

In preparation for choosing a musical instrument to play in 5th grade, the LASD Music Department will be hosting two nights of “Instrument Quest.” Your child will see and be able to try out every instrument we offer in our Band (flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone) and Orchestra (violin, viola, cello) programs.

This is a great opportunity to see which instrument best suits your child. Parents are welcome to ask questions and to meet the LASD Music teachers.

Come on either evening between the hours of 5pm-7pm.  4th grade students will be making instrument selections in their homeroom classes at the end of May.
