Principal’s Message

Dear Springer Community,

On Wednesday, in recognition for all of this year’s volunteers, we held a volunteer breakfast to show our appreciation.  On behalf of the Springer Staff and myself I want to extend a THANK YOU.  Your, “Kindness,  like a boomerang, always returns.” – Author Unknown.   The return is endless and far reaching.  Your time has benefitted all of our students, and by your example our students see what they too can give back.

Field Day is Friday, June 1st.  All of the students will be participating in field games starting at 9am to 12:15pm.  Please be sure your child wears sunscreen and brings water for the day.  It will be a rainbow of fun seeing all of the students out and about.  And of course we will end with the Springer Traditional Hershey Kiss relay.

The  Magical Bridge Playground coin drive continues into next week.  Thank you in advance for your support. You may make donations online: http://magicalbridges.org/springer  or bring coins to school as well.  Each of the classrooms have coin collection containers.  For more information about Magical Bridge coming to Mountain View:

CLICK HERE to see a video about Magical Bridge.

Don’t forget to check the lost and found.  There are still lots of treasures to be found.

Have an enjoyable Memorial weekend!

Lynn

Reading Corner

Reading Corner: Looking Back on a Year of Reading

Students have made incredible progress in their reading this year. This week as I visited classrooms, I asked some students to think back on their experience reading this year. Students reflected on what they learned and enjoyed, and it was great to hear their feedback. This is a compilation of comments from students at each grade:

TK

I liked reading! We read books. I liked looking at the pictures and the words. Our teacher read a lot of stories to us. It was fun. I love reading.

Kindergarten

We learned that reading is fun! You can read with the pictures, and you have pointer power and snap power. Pointer pointer means you point to the words so you don’t miss one. We learn snap words. If it’s a short word, you learn it so you know it in a snap, like “the.” In reading workshop I liked that we did private reading and partner reading. I got to read by myself and also to a friend sometimes.

1st Grade

I just like reading, you know? My favorite part is pulling from our book boxes. You get all sorts of different books. I like reading nonfiction books because they give you information. I like the characters in stories. Some of them are funny, and there’s lots of problems in books. I notice when their feelings change, and then I change my voice. I learned a lot, like we should actually pay attention to the words, or we could miss really good details. I like that you can feel like you’re in that place when you read. It’s like you can go on the adventure yourself.

2nd Grade

Books bring us to different places and adventures. Sometimes when I’m reading, I use my imagination, and it’s like I’m in the book. When I read A to Z Mysteries, I always think I’m solving the mystery too, and I try to figure it out. I like that we get to read books with our classmates in book clubs and learn their style of reading. We also get to know the characters in our books really well. You get to know how characters solve problems, and I like how the characters and stories surprise you.

3rd Grade

I like it when books get harder. You have to use new strategies to understand them fully, like inferring. Our teacher taught us that we can use what we learned earlier in the book to infer and predict what’s going to happen next. It helps us read more challenging books, and I really like that. I also use all the strategies my teacher taught me to figure out words, like breaking words into chunks.

4th Grade

We learned how to read, not just reading the words on the page, but to really understand what we read. If I didn’t know a word, I used to just ask my parents. Now I look at the other words around it, or I’ll break it up and sound it out. I understand stories better with the tools we have. It helps me understand what the story is really about, because we’re learning that the story is more than just the words on a page. A book can take you to a different world and teach you lessons.

5th Grade

I really liked book clubs. We got to read different types of books, even books you would usually ignore because they’re so thick, but you find out they’re really good. You can challenge yourself, and your club helps you. You might not think you can read all the pages, but you do it. We talked to each other about what we liked about the books. They were self-motivated groups. Nobody was the boss, telling us what to do. It was still organized, and it helped us learn time management. I really liked that we learned about metaphorical dragons in fantasy books.

6th Grade

I really liked book clubs because it was fun to talk about our reading. We got to read different genres. Some genres I hadn’t tried out before, but it turned out that I really like them. For example, I thought nonfiction would be all facts, but the book I read was really funny and interesting. I liked talking to people who had the same interests. I never thought setting was anything other than where the book happened. Now I know it’s also about the mood and other things. I learned a lot.

School Supplies Collection

Hello Springer parents! Since the end of the school year is fast approaching, most of your children will be cleaning out their desks and backpacks of their school supplies. Instead of throwing these away, it would be greatly appreciated if you would drop them in the cardboard box in the office labeled, "Supplying Schools." Supplying Schools is a club at Mountain View high school that collects gently used school supplies from LASD schools and donates them to schools in East Palo Alto whose teachers are taking money out of their own paychecks to buy supplies for their students. Please drop off pencils, pens, markers, colored pencils, crayons, binders, folders, pencil boxes, sharpeners, scissors, backpacks, and any other supplies that are in decent condition. This box will be in the office starting on Tuesday, May 29 through June 13.   We really appreciate all that you have to offer. Thank you!

Springer Scribes

Every Thursday, a dedicated group of writers has been meeting at lunch to craft poems and stories as part of the Project Cornerstone FunVisor Springer Scribes activity. At our final two meetings on 5/10 and 5/17, each author is invited select their favorite work to be published in our fourth annual literary journal. If your child would like their work included, you can also email a copy to SpringerScribes@gmail.com.

This program is a really fun and rewarding opportunity for both the kids and the parent volunteers. It shows the kids another "caring adult" in their lives who can help them find their "spark." Our parent leader is "graduating" this year, so we are looking for parent(s) to keep the program going. If you are interested in volunteering next year, come by Thursday at lunch to learn more and join the fun, or send a message to SpringerScribes@gmail.com.

Yearbook

As a reminder, the PTA is providing one yearbook to each student and will be distributed in early June. Thank you!
