News and Announcements

PTA Newsletter: Check your child's Friday Folder for a newsletter from the PTA. We don't normally print newsletters, but this one is full of important news about our plans, programs, and budget for the year. You can also view it online.

Online Back to School Packet: Continuing our efforts to be more efficient and green, our online Back to School Packet has returned. Join the PTA, order spirit wear, join the birthday book club, and so on! The deadline to complete the online forms is Friday, September 2nd. Begin now. Password: stars10.

Ice Cream Social (8/19): Students are invited to stay after school today, August 19, for a complimentary ice cream sundae to celebrate the first week of school!

Weed–N–Feed (8/20, 9:30–1:00): WEED the Earth! FEED the People! Tomorrow, Saturday, August 20, from 9:30–1. Bring gardening gloves, weeding tools, brooms, bins, sun protection and... and lunch money! Speedy-Panini and KaraVan food trucks (yummy sandwiches and cupcakes) arrive at 11:30 am, so please attend anytime between 9:30–1:00 and plan on staying long enough to socialize with other Springer citizens over a convenient lunch (under the shade structure) after sprucing up our campus. We need the manpower to clean up our campus and to support these food truck vendors, so come hungry and leave happy! No need to pre-order food.

Hot Lunch with KidChow: Did you know that Hot Lunch is a major PTA fundraiser, raising almost $30,000 annually? It's an easy way to support the PTA. Order by 8/22 for the week of 8/29. To find out more about the Hot Lunch program, visit the Hot Lunch page.

Hot Lunch Volunteers Needed: The Hot Lunch committee still needs volunteers for the following days. If you can help, please contact Anita Leo (AMLEO73@yahoo.com). We cannot provide this service to our community without volunteers, so please consider giving your time to this effort. Thank you.

Back-to-School Night (9/1, 6:00–8:10): One of the most important events of the year is just days away. We will host our annual Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 1. Teachers will present information on curriculum, procedures, and style—all in 30 minutes. Please remember that this is an informational evening and teachers will not have time to discuss your individual child’s progress at this event. Schedule for the evening is as follows:
  • 6:00 New Parent Information Meeting in the Multi
  • 6:30 Kindergarten and SDC123 (Rm 19) presentations
  • 7:05 1st-3rd Grade and SDC456 (Rm 7) presentations
  • 7:40 4th-6th Grade presentations
Minimum Day (9/2): Springer’s first minimum day will be Friday, 9/2. Find the minimum day schedule on the Daily Schedule page of the Springer website.

Please Review the Springer School Emergency Procedures: For example, did you know that no one, not even a relative or a babysitter, will be allowed to pick-up your child in an emergency unless they are listed on your student’s white emergency card? The Emergency Procedures file contains a summary designed to be cut out and kept in parent and caregiver’s wallets.

PTA Office Hours: Starting Friday, August 26th, your PTA officers will be available for office hours. Find co-presidents Kelly Toshach and Brooke Schiller, as well as other PTA board members, at Starbucks in the Safeway Shopping Center Fridays from 9:00–10:00 am. This is a great opportunity to get to know more about the PTA at Springer School, ask questions, express interests, voice concerns, and brainstorm new ideas and solutions. So, head over after drop-off, grab your coffee or tea, and let us know what's on your mind. If you can’t make it to Starbucks, no worries! Catch us on campus or send an email to SpringerPTA@gmail.com. We look forward to chatting with you.

Individual Student STAR Reports: All individual student STAR reports will be mailed by the end of next week.  Thank you for your patience.

Los Altos School District Committees: Parent Involvement: The Los Altos School District has the following opportunities for district committee participation for the 2011-12 school year:  District Curriculum Committee, Junior High/Middle School Committee and Response to Instruction and Intervention Committee. Committee Meetings are generally held at the District Office from 3:00-5:00 pm, quarterly, monthly, or as needed, depending on the task of the committee. Please click here for a brief description of each committee as well as a form to express your interest.

Student Activities

CSMA Art Club: The Community School of Music and Arts provides art classes where students draw, paint, and sculpt. Classes for grades 4–6 on Monday at 3:00 pm, and for grades K–3 on Thursdays at 2:30. Flyers/Registration: CSMA Gr 4–6CSMA Gr K–3.

Easy Spanish: This Children's after school program for all students, grades K–6, uses games and interactive activities to develop vocabulary and grammar skills in Spanish. Classes on the Springer campus on Thursdays. See the flyer.

YMCA Adventure Guides Program: Recruiting parents and children to establish a larger presence of the Adventure Guide program at Springer Elementary. The YMCA Adventure Guide program fosters understanding and companionship between parent and child. The program is for dads and sons, dads and daughters, and BRAND NEW: moms and daughters. All children are K through 3 grade. The program is a great way to make new friends, create a sense of belonging and enjoy time with a parent. It is also a great way for the parents to get to know each other outside of regular school activities. Once a month, you will meet to share a meal and do a craft activity, as well as enjoy sharing time. In addition, all local groups (“circles”) get together for a monthly activity or overnight outing. The activities may include a trip to the zoo, bowling alley, skating rink, geo caching, camping, etc.  See the brochure.
