News and Announcements

Thank You, LASD Parents, for your generosity!
We are off to a strong start and have reached the $400k mark towards our $2.35 million target for 2011-12.  We have a long way to go but $100 per month per child is a small price to pay for the high quality education our children receive in the Los Altos School District!

To raise needed funds to pay for the benefits all children in LASD are receiving today and throughout this school year, LAEF’s suggested donation is $1,000/child but 100% participation is the goal at whatever level you feel comfortable. If you start a monthly payment plan before the end of September, you can make 10 payments of $100 per child through June.  Please remember to apply for a company match, if available.

Need another reason to donate early?  Any increase in your donation over last year, including donations from new families, will be matched $1-for-$1 by an anonymous group of donors if you give before 11/1.  Please make your tax-deductible donation online today at the LAEF website
PTA is on target!  Our online PTA Back to School form closed this past Wednesday, and we are delighted to announce the results.

• 341 of 383 families—or 89%— completed the form.
• Our PTA membership is 450 members strong.
• $31,848 was donated to our Tech Fund.

In a nutshell, PTA has hit our first financial goal of the year: to raise $30,000 for the Technology Fund, which pays the annualized cost to maintain and replace technology on campus. Thanks to everyone for your contributions.

The online form is closed, but you may still become a PTA member and enroll in several of our programs with the paper form that's available in the office.

October 5: International Walk to School and Crazy Feet Day

8:00 AM at Varsity Park

We will serve doughnut holes at Springer School  instead of Varsity Park. If you can’t make it to Varsity Park by 8 AM to walk with the main group, please feel free to organize a walking school bus from your neighborhood.

We’ll all meet at Springer at 8:15 for doughnuts.

Don’t forget to wear your crazy feet!

See the Walk to School flyer for more details.
The Annual Costume Parade will be Monday, October 31st at 1pm.  This community event allows our students to show off their zany, funny, and scary costumes in a parade-style format.
Site Council Members Wanted:  Site Council is an official school committee made up of staff and parents who study various aspects of school.  This year the Site Council will conduct a survey and research facilities improvements.  If this sounds like something that interests you, please plan to attend our first meeting on October 4 at 3:15pm in the staff room (this is a date change from what was previously advertised).  Contact Mr. Spenader if interested.
Khan Academy Coffee - Thursday, September 29 in the multi at 8.45am!
Information and answer questions about the Khan Academy math program that will be used to supplement instruction in all 5th and 6th grade classes this year. Alyssa Gallagher, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, is our guest speaker and all parents are invited to attend! See the flyer.
Calling all PTA parents!
Please join in on a Community Parent Meeting, October 11th at 7:30pm in the LASD District Board Room at Covington Rd., Los Altos.  As part of the LASD Blue Print Sessions and the Strategic Plan for BCS (Bullis Charter School), there is a call to action to strengthen the parent community working relationship (LASD) and foster positive relationships (BCS) within our Los Altos public school parent community.
Why do this now, you ask?
Well, currently both LASD and BCS are spending time and resources on issues that might otherwise not be issues, if parents can agree and understand the goals and objectives of LASD and BCS.  Such valuable time and resources could be put into our children's classrooms directly. Please RSVP to martha[at]mcclatchie.com if you would like to attend.  This is an adult only event, no babysitting available.
WoW: New Date of September 28th!
Please join us September 28th, on our first ever school wide WoW Wednesday. Grab a friend, and walk or wheel to school that day and start to make a change.
Exercise, cleaner environment, and a safer school campus.
Springer STAR Submissions
If you’d like to submit an item for the Springer Star newsletter, please note that the deadline for submissions is Monday noon for inclusion in that week’s edition.  As a reminder on how to do it, send a text-only blurb to our newsletter editor at springer_star@yahoo.com.  If you like, you can also include a PDF or Word flyer.

Walkathon

The Springer Walkathon will be

Oceans in Motion!

Saturday, October 15th

The Springer Walkathon is our annual, fun day of fundraising—eliciting nearly 100% participation from Springer students!  A mighty wave of students will surge around the Springer Sea (field) collecting sunken treasures while they earn money for much-needed PTA programs.  Most families stay for the entire event, coming early and leaving late. Don’t miss it—it’s sure to be a WHALE of a walkathon! See the Springer Walkathon webpage for more information.

Volunteer to help! We need many volunteers to make this a fun and safe event!  It’s fun and easy! Please help us by signing up for a shift that day, using the Volunteer Google document.

Donations:  We are collecting donations to help keep down Walkathon costs.  Please drop off any donated cases of bottled water in the office.  We are also requesting small, giveaway toys to be used as incentive prizes:  toys from happy meals, birthday party gift bags etc.  Keep an eye out for collection boxes!

Extra t-shirt ordering form: Please click on the underlined text to print out and use this form to order any extra t-shirts for siblings, friends or parents.  Forms must be returned to the Walkathon office cubby by Wednesday, September 21st so the shirts can be ordered.

Questions?  Many answers can be found in the full Registration packet given to the new families and K–1st grade classes.  Find the rules, calendar, checklist, food pre-order form, and other useful walkathon information. You can also contact Walkathon co-chairs Karey Gutierrez kareytg[at]gmail.com and Katie Cowley ktcowley[at]yahoo.com.  We’re here to help!
