Principal’s Message |
Dear Springer Community,
As we expanded our “It’s the Springer Thing” this week with The Great Kindness Challenge… students were continuing to share their kindness with others. Classes created classroom door decorations, students help beautify the school, some passed out hearts to others, and everyone participated in spirit days. I’d have to say crazy hair day was my favorite. We concluded the challenge week with students placing their handprints on a canvas to celebrate the week and it will be a constant reminder that kindness happens everyday!
“Kind hearts are the gardens. Kind thoughts are the roots. Kind words are the flowers. Kind deeds are the fruits. Take care of your garden and keep out the weeds. Fill it with sunshine, kind words and kind deeds.” (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)
Congratulations to our Geo Bee winner, Manu S.! He is a Sixth Grader in Mrs. Robb’s class. Here is the list of students that competed in the final round of competition. They all worked hard to get to the final round, but they had fun too.

Enjoy your weekend, Lynn

Reading Corner |
Celebrating the Kindness Challenge through Reading Children’s literature can be a powerful way to teach, model, and inspire traits such as kindness, empathy, compassion, and inclusion. We see this in the impact of Project Cornerstone, and of the reading and discussion that happens in classrooms and homes throughout the year. Thinking about fictional characters can help students think more concretely about challenging situations and topics. These stories can help students think beyond the words that are on the page, and to make connections to their own lives and to the world beyond. The learning can be particularly impactful when children have the opportunity to discuss and process what they have read. As your child reads stories, and/or you read together, you might ask questions to help promote deeper thinking:
Common Sense Media has published lists of suggested books to promote empathy as well astolerance and diversity. There are many other great selections and book lists available, including the books used for Project Cornerstone and in classrooms throughout the year, but these discussions certainly are not limited to books with explicit lessons. There are opportunities to think about character strengths and other takeaways in just about any book. |
